The Earth Is Not Eternal

And the Lord was pleased with the aroma of the sacrifice and said to himself, “I will never again curse the ground because of the human race, even though everything they think or imagine is bent toward evil from childhood. I will never again destroy all living things. As long as the earth remains, there will be planting and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night." [Genesis 8.21-22]

These words were God's covenant with Noah.

God said He would NEVER again curse the ground (because of the human race - even though they are corrupt).

God said He would NEVER again destroy all living things.

God said, as long as the earth remains, agriculture, weather patterns, seasons, and day/night cycles WILL CONTINUE.

The only qualifier God put out with His promise was, "as long as the earth remains." In other words, if it ends, it ALL ends. It is a package deal from the flood forward.

My take-away from this is that the earth is temporal in God's eyes. Even though the earth has existed for a long time, it has an expiration date. Revelation 21.1a says: Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. Yes, the earth, as we know it, WILL cease to exist.

It seems prudent to me to keep this fact in mind!

Father, help me to remain mindful that the earth as we know it is not eternal. And, as I establish this fact in my mind, help me to live accordingly as one who, in Christ, IS eternal!
