But the tribe of Judah could not drive out the Jebusites, who lived in the city of Jerusalem, so the Jebusites live there among the people of Judah to this day. [Joshua 15.63]
I was looking for Jesus this morning in Joshua, but found it quite difficult due to the nature of the OYCB passages for the day.
Knowing that Jesus was prophesied to come from the tribe of Judah, I took particular notice of the events regarding Judah in today's reading.
It is no real surprise that much controversy exists even today concerning the origin and identification of the Jebusites mentioned in the verse above. Opinions seem to abound, but there is no conclusive evidence about the origins of the Jebusites and their town, Jerusalem.
No less than two major world religions lay claim to Jerusalem as their central geography point which, in my mind, undoubtedly adversely affects the search for truth regarding the city and the ancient people of the city.
Would Christ followers expect any less controversy however? The life of Jesus similarly was questioned for validity - even while Jesus walked the earth.
I have no idea what it all means, but I am quite satisfied that controversy will continue regarding Jerusalem and Jesus! What's more, the Bible clearly prophetically indicates that the Temple will be rebuilt in Jerusalem on the exact spot where another of the major world religions currently has a temple. This should be interesting to watch and see!
Father, I suppose it would be easy to lose heart in Christian faith for those who claim the faith but have neither actually experienced a change nor have peace in their hearts. Help me on my journey in search of truth but also help me to remain mindful of Your dwelling in me and to stay on-track with Your Spirit!
