Then the Lord said to Moses, “On behalf of the people of Israel, take revenge on the Midianites for leading them into idolatry. After that, you will die and join your ancestors.” [Numbers 31.1-2]
To be in fellowship with the LORD is a good thing. Here we see Moses being told by God that he would witness Israel rout the Midianites, then die.
Now, before getting all weird about how Moses felt knowing his life was nearing end, I am just thinking of how it must have felt to know with confidence that his life's tasks were done! From all the Biblical accounts of Moses, he had seen a lot of stuff! No doubt, Moses had lived quite a life. He had done a lot of things right and a thing or two wrong. He stayed the course on the life-journey God put before him and was able to know and complete his main life objective.
So, to get all worried because God told him his life was over was likely never the case for Moses. I feel certain Moses was tired - but it was a good 'tired.' Moses was confident in his relationship with the LORD and had done what the LORD instructed him to do. His life was complete.
To be confident and content in both life AND death is blessing at its fullest. I am afraid that most believers never really experience either. How many of us really live life with purpose and have no great regret or worse, fear when facing death? How many actually KNOW they are walking in a calling from God and not simply following circumstances? How many actually see the fulfillment of that calling and then embrace the end of their life? I dare say pitiful few.
Father, help me to have the kind of relationship with You that Moses had - obediently following not just Your commands, but Your calling. Help me to live with purpose so that I might die with resolve! What more could I ask for?
