Days, Weeks, Months, and Years

You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of complete rest, an official day for holy assembly. [Leviticus 23.3a]

The wording above remained a common theme throughout today's OYCB reading.  In the Sabbath, as well as the prescribed festivals, there is the theme of rest.

Along with rest, there is also the theme of 'a day of holy assembly.'

In today's culture, I find it hard to imagine a day of holy assembly that is still a day of rest (much less a day of complete rest).

The point in all this today is not that we observe days, weeks, months and years of ceremony, but that we see Jesus as our Rest.  If we observe Jesus ourselves and encourage others to do the same (holy assembly), then we have fulfilled our contemporary duty.

This sounds easy enough, right?

Like with the Sabbaths and festivals, we have the same regular opportunities to rest in Jesus (know Him) and observe holy assemblies (make Him known).  This could be seen as going to church on a weekly basis, but it signifies much more than that.  The regularity of the Sabbaths and festivals should indicate to us the constant necessity that we look to Jesus not just whenever a building is opened for a church service, but when our eyes are open and we are awake!

It is hard to imagine the Jews were able to get much done with all the ceremonies and festivals!  But frankly, if we view 'resting in Jesus' in the right light, it would be hard to imagine getting anything done without it!

Father, help me to rest in Jesus.  Help me to find that complete rest - not on a prescribed day, but in the person - the complete person - of Jesus.  Likewise, help me to forsake not my fellow believers in gathering with them to make You known!
