The Turmoil of Love

The life of David was a complicated one.  As I considered the implications of all that David had to do (to think and decide) it occurred to me that the responsibility upon him was great.  And, although many times I have faulted David for poor decisions, today, I feel more mercy for him.

The entirety of the relationship of David with the family of Saul could not have been a simple one.  There was no doubt an enormous amount of emotional strain upon David as it regarded Saul and his family.  David's overall love for, and consequent obedience to God left David with more than one opportunity to make critical life-or-death decisions as it regarded Saul.

Then, in today's reading, the situations with Abner and then Joab must have been heart-wrenching for David.  The emotions present and acted upon were real.

But isn't that just like love?  Does it not seem that the more passionate the love, the more conflict is encountered with the lack thereof?  Consider the turmoil of the Ultimate Love of Jesus!  For all His passion and love for mankind, Jesus experienced thorough rejection and betrayal.

So, what's the point?  I suppose what it all speaks to me today is that although life is full of joy and triumph, there will likewise be no lack of opportunity for turmoil and defeat in the same context.

Father, I need You to help me to love...  But also, I need You to help me deal with the complications that love always seems to have in tow.  Love is worth the effort - thank You for proving that to me through the life of David and then ultimately through Jesus!
