And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him. [Hebrews 11.6]
I am not sure where to go with this today...
Nothing but faith pleases God. And, it seems the writer further elaborates this fact by defining it with two components: 1) believing that God exists, and 2) seeking Him.
Is it not enough to simply believe God exists without worrying about the "seeking Him" part? Evidently not. And, it would seem the writer of the book of James in the NT also has some concurring thoughts about it as well (James 2.19). But what does "seeking Him" really mean?
In the context of Hebrews, "seeking Him" appears to have a connotation of responding to God's promises. This would certainly first require learning the promises mentioned. In OT times and in early NT times, the primary way to learn the promises was by word of mouth and memorization. The advent and subsequent era of the printing press created an entirely different environment in which to learn however. Then, ironically, with the development of electronic technology, God's promises are once again abundant via "word of mouth" albeit electronic. Regardless, God's promises (His Word) are of little consequence to us if we do not know them.
James' factors in faith are similar. Faith involves "believing God" but, since even demons believe in God, "believing God" as a stand-alone factor is not enough. James says further that faith must not only be internal, but external as well - genuine faith is visible! Visible faith manifests in "good deeds" according to James - tangible ways - how we treat others, for example. But my question is this, how can we treat others right without first knowing how to treat them right, and also being able to teach them what is right? My heart begs to inject the Word here; and the Word is Jesus and the full scope of His story. Full circle: "seeking Him" and "good deeds" are inseparable companions!
Hmmm...
Father, I DO believe in You. Help me to get the rest of it right too...
