True Faith

Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons. [I Timothy 4.1]

What is this 'true faith'?

What are the 'deceptive spirits and teachings'?

Although Paul does not define 'true faith' here, he does give some insight into what the 'deceptive spirits and teachings' is about. It would appear from verse 3 that the main calling card of those who are deceived is legalism (saying it is wrong to be married or eat certain foods...).

If we ascertain that 'true faith' is the antithesis of 'deceptive spirits and teachings', then it is safe to conclude that true faith combats legalism on every point and issue. It is safe to conclude that true faith makes every effort to avoid falling into legalism - to avoid the deceptive spirits and teachings of being "good" based on a set of rules.

If Paul recognized this problem in his day, how much more should we be on alert for it today?

Father, grant us eyes to see and ears to hear today the message of true faith. Let Your Word continue to transform us - to nurture us in true faith!
