Your prophets have said so many foolish things, false to the core. They did not save you from exile by pointing out your sins. Instead, they painted false pictures, filling you with false hope. [Lamentations 2.14]
I guess Jeremiah is saying "I told you so!"
An interesting point however is that exile and destruction could have been avoided according to Jeremiah. Had the prophets (in unity) pointed out Israel's sins instead of saying "all is good" the people certainly would have repented and God would have relented. But no.
Are there any prophets today? If so, what is their message?
If there are indeed prophets today, what are they saying? Are we listening?
The words "false hope" have a haunting effect in today's reading.
Father, I don't want to be operating on a false hope. Really. Reveal to me (to us) Your plan. Forgive us for our numbness to anything holy and right. Help us to recognize and heed the voice of Your Holy Spirit (speaking through Your Word!).
