What's The Question? Pass The Bread

That same day two of Jesus’ followers were walking to the village of Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem. As they walked along they were talking about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things, Jesus himself suddenly came and began walking with them. But God kept them from recognizing him. He asked them, “What are you discussing so intently as you walk along?” They stopped short, sadness written across their faces. Then one of them, Cleopas, replied, “You must be the only person in Jerusalem who hasn’t heard about all the things that have happened there the last few days.” [Luke 24.13-18]

Oh my word. Today we encounter yet another question from Jesus. We have no reason to believe Jesus asked the question because He needed information. So, why did Jesus ask that question?

What Jesus did, was ask a question that would cause the two to reflect on all that had happened. As they rehearsed all those events, they confirmed them in their minds. Then when they invited Jesus to supper, it all came together when Jesus broke the bread and they realized that Jesus had indeed fulfilled all the prophecies about Him.

I take away a couple things from this: 1) Pay attention to Jesus' questions! and 2) breaking bread revealed Jesus.

Father, help me to see and understand the significance of Jesus' and Your questions throughout the Bible. Help me as well to understand the power of sharing a meal with someone. May I be attentive to every question for the answer that is obvious in me and may I be purposeful in breaking break so that Christ might be revealed!
