Love Manifested In Silence

“Why don’t you talk to me?” Pilate demanded. “Don’t you realize that I have the power to release you or crucify you?” [John 19.10]

Jesus' refusal to talk to Pilate requires only little explanation. Pilate was obviously a somewhat reasonable man. He seemed genuinely interested in hearing what Jesus had to say. At least two of the Gospels record that Pilate knew the religious leaders had condemned Jesus out of envy. Consequently, Pilate found no reason to condemn Jesus.

Had Jesus spoken to Pilate, it is highly probable that Pilate would have protected Jesus and perhaps even have prosecuted those who falsely accused Him.

If ever there was a time Jesus could have affected an alternate outcome of His mock trial, this was it. And, all it would have required was just a little more conversation with Pilate.

But Jesus remained silent. In this instance, the very love of God manifested in silence.

The depth of Jesus' silence was eternal.

Praise the name of Jesus!

Father, thank You for Your plan for my salvation and the salvation of the world. I love the irony that Jesus' silence before Pilate revealed Your love!
